We didn't come from software. We came from a shop.
Polaris builds business software for Africa. We started by building the tool we needed to fix our own business — a kitchenware shop in Kampala — and only turned it into a product once it had proven itself in daily use.
For most businesses like ours, the software choice was cruel. Import a system built for another world — priced in dollars, dead without internet, speaking a foreign business language, gone the moment it broke. Hire someone to build a one-off that nobody maintains. Or do what most do: a book, a calculator, and a very good memory.
None of that told us the one thing we needed to know — were we actually making money? We could see sales all day long. Profit, stock and expenses lived in the dark. After we closed a branch and counted the losses, we stopped waiting for someone else to solve it and built our own.
Problems we experienced
What changed
Because other owners kept asking.
We never set out to sell software. But neighbouring shop owners, customers and friends saw how our business ran — the fast checkout, the organised stock, the reports that were actually real — and kept asking if they could use the same thing.
They had the exact problems we'd had. It felt wrong to keep the fix to ourselves. So Polaris POS became a product — because it already worked, not because we wanted to enter a market.
The principles the shop floor taught us.
Reliability is the product
It works offline, during load-shedding, on the phone you already own. We delay a feature before shipping one that assumes conditions African businesses don't have.
Built for here
Mobile money, local tax, local languages, local trade — first-class, not a translation of somewhere else.
Every feature earns its place
We only build what a real business genuinely needs. Nothing goes in to match a competitor's checklist — that's how the product stays honest.
Craft is respect
A shop owner deserves software they're proud to use. We hold ourselves to a world-class design bar, for everyone — not just corporations who can pay for it.
One platform, one truth
Enter a sale once and stock, books and reports all update. A business should never re-enter what it already told us.
Someone has to stay
We run our own business on this. It's maintained, supported on WhatsApp in your language, and improved for years — not a build that dies on handover.
Let's talk about your business.
Whether you run one shop or fifty, Polaris is built to grow with you. Book a walkthrough and we'll show you what it found in ours.
